Short Hills is an unincorporated area located within the township of Millburn, in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is a popular commuter town for residents who work in New York City. This affluent enclave features stately, older homes and newer construction.

History

Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, commonly called Parsippany, is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 50,649. The name Parsippany comes from the Lenape Native American word parsipanong, which means “the place where the river winds through the valley”. Parsippany-Troy Hills is the most populous municipality in Morris County.

Parsippany-Troy Hills was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1928, from portions of Hanover Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 9, 1928.

In 2006, Parsippany-Troy Hills was recognized by Money magazine as the 17th-ranked of the Best Places to Live in the United States, the highest-ranked location in New Jersey. In 2008, it moved up to 13th position. The township was not on the 2007 list because that year’s list included only municipalities with a population of 50,000 or less.

Geology

Parsippany lies in the Newark Piedmont Basin. Around five hundred million years ago, a chain of volcanic islands crashed into the proto North America. These islands rode over the North American plate and created the highlands of New Jersey, which start in western Parsippany and created the rest of eastern New Jersey. Then around four hundred fifty million years ago, a small continent collided with North America and created folding and faulting in western New Jersey and southern Appalachia. The swamps and meadows of Parsippany were created when the North American Plate separated from the African Plate. An aborted rift system was created. The land area lowered between the Ramapo Fault and a fault west of Paterson. The Ramapo Fault goes though western part of the township. To the east of this fault is where there was Lake Passaic.

Most of the township was under Lake Passaic when the Wisconsin Glacier melted around 13,000 BC. From the edge of the Ramapo fault in western Parsippany eastward to almost Paterson was Lake Passaic.

The area was first tundra when the Wisconsin Glacier melted and then as the area warmed formed taiga/boreal forests, along with vast meadows. Slowly Lake Passaic drained and formed swamps in the township, such as Troy Meadows, and Lee Meadows on the old Alderney Farm tract are perfect examples. Due to the fact that there was lowlands next to highlands created a diversity of flora and fauna. Swamps and meadows next to oak forests created a diverse flora and fauna spectrum.

Economy

Avis Budget Group, B & G Foods, Curtiss-Wright, Wyndham Worldwide, and Cadbury Adams are headquartered in Parsippany-Troy Hills.

Cendant Corporation moved its headquarters to Parsippany-Troy Hills in 2001; in 2006 Cendant separated into several different companies, including Avis Budget Group, parent company of Avis Rent a Car System and Budget Rent a Car.

The headquarters of PNY Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of computer memory devices, is in Parsippany-Troy Hills. Plus, Reckitt Benckiser and Ricola’s United States headquarters are in Parsippany-Troy Hills.
