Practice Areas: As a Certified Matrimonial Attorney, Tanya Helfand handles all areas of family law including, but not limited to, custody, alimony, child support, complex financial cases, prenuptial agreements, and domestic violence matters. Ms. Helfand is a qualified mediator and certified collaborative divorce lawyer. She also handles guardianships and consumer and small business bankruptcies, Chapter 7 & 13.

Biography: Tanya Helfand opened her first office in 1997 in Rockaway, New Jersey and then a second office in Livingston in 2007. In September 2010, the offices were consolidated to a larger location in Whippany on Route 10 to accommodate clients in both locations. Ms. Helfand is also of counsel at the law office of Borstein & Sheinbaum located at 420 Lexington Avenue, New York, New York.
With 23 years of legal experience, Ms. Helfand focuses her practice in the area of Family Law. Ms. Helfand has successfully represented both men and women with complex custody and financial matters through negotiation as well as trial through conclusion. Settlement is best, but sometimes pursuing the matter in court is necessary. Ms. Helfand is on the Superior Court’s Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel in Morris and Essex Counties. In this capacity she has successfully provided settlement recommendations to couples who have been litigating for an extended period of time, (often over a year). She is also referred by the courts as an economic mediator. She is a member of the Matrimonial Inn of Court in Northern New Jersey. She is direct and practical, and will always try to negotiate or mediate your matter first to resolve the case amicably; however, if you cannot obtain a fair and reasonable settlement outside of court, Ms. Helfand and her staff are prepared to properly represent you through the conclusion of the matter.
Ms. Helfand handles bankruptcy matters including Chapter 7 & 13. She handles adversary proceedings in Bankruptcy Court relative to divorce matters. Ms. Helfand is a member of the Bankruptcy Inn of Court in Northern New Jersey. She also handles guardianships. For several years, the Morris County Surrogate has appointed Ms. Helfand as independent counsel in guardianship matters, performing investigations and representing the incompetent individual.
Ms. Helfand has an extensive business background, which is extremely helpful with all the areas of her practice. Prior to opening her office, she owned retail businesses and has helped many professionals with their practices.
Also, before opening her own firm, Ms. Helfand worked as an associate at the law office of Herman Osofsky, Esq. in Passaic County.
Ms. Helfand is on the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Services of Central New Jersey and the Board of Women’s Philanthropy for UJA, and on the planning committee for the Jewish Law Symposium. She is an active supporter of JBWS and the American Jewish Committee Global Issues . Her dog Ruby the Rottweiler is trained as a companion dog to visit patients in New Jersey. She is a member of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and chaired a Women in Business event in 2012. She is also a member of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, JBN, New Jersey Women in Business, and the International Association of Collaborative Lawyers. She speaks on the subjects of divorce and bankruptcy throughout New Jersey and writes a weekly column now for Desi Talk, a newspaper focusing on the Asian community.
